Audition Tape Assignment

BIG BROTHER 13 AUDITION TAPE

This is my attempt at getting cast for Big Brother 13. There weren't many restrictions on the audition tape other than keeping it under 3 minutes, contestants are asked to be 21 or older, and to keep cursing at a minimum. Suggestions by the casting director were simple...be yourself and avoid gimmicks such as costumes, movie monologues, and singing performances. I went with more of a funny style of video hoping it would appeal to any one watching.

Practice Pitch assignment

AUTHOR NAME : Benjamin F. M. Novoa

Genre: Reality Series

TITLE: You’re never too OLD SCHOOL

Reg. Writers Guide of America #: 5495495BEN

LOGLINE: “Old School” combined with the “Real world”. Adult men get the chance to go back in time and become frat boys once again; through classes, weekly Hazing competitions, and Party challenges, they will finally sew their wild oats.

TREATMENT (Synopsis, Outline):

(Themes: Reality-based, fantasy fulfillment, comedy)

Three teams of 4 are chosen-consisting of men 33 and older from all walks of life. The business man type, the adult stoner, the straight and narrow geek, and the senior citizen are just a few of the character types chosen to depict the various adult males in the world.

Teams are placed together at random as they descend upon the University of Virginia, ranked the number one party school in America by Playboy magazine. The teams are given modest (beat up) fraternity houses just off of campus to live in for the semester. Where camera’s will follow their everyday lives and interactions. One actual college student and fraternity member will serve as their “guide” and Head line member, the men will be at his every beck and call, His every whim is their command. Drop and give me 20, they must oblige, drop trough, they do so.

They are forced to hold down a full time school schedule, their grades will go towards a final point system for the week. At the end of every week the three teams participate in a Hazing exercise, say a marshmallow-in- the-butt-cheeks race, or beer chug challenge with Old English (ranked the world’s worst beer), the naked obstacle course, and even the guess-what-I-put in this mixed drink challenge.

The weekly challenge winners gain bonuses for their weekly parties. Kegs, famous D J’s and Celebrity Hosts are the benefits given to the challenge winners to allow them the greatest parties possible. Whatever team can raise the most money from their parties (All proceeds go to charity of course) by the end of the semester will win the grand prize: A mid-life crisis Hot rod, $250,000, and four free semesters of funding for the person of their choosing.

3)Concept or your audition tape

Use humor and wit to showcase my personality as a potent ingredient in the Big Brother formula, rather than an over the top production or boring sit-on-the couch descriptions.

4)Treatment of your audition tape

The idea here is to gain the admiration of casting directors. Make myself stand out as someone they need on the show, and part of the core cast. I tend to like a humurous approach and make things light, while still showcasing what I have to offer.

The idea is get the generally required details of myself out the way, and to showcase my personality with examples or stories instead of just saying it, as Big Brothers casting director mentioned in the previous video.

It begins with the standard medium shot of me in a common setting. I'll cover the standard bits of information- My name, school, interests, hobbies. These will be interwoven with examples of what I'm speaking of (with a touch of humor).

For example I'll say I'm an amazing athlete and can handle physical challenges, cut to me on a track with short shorts, I run for 15 seconds, get winded, then embarassed, "turn the camera off", cut back to my face interview. I'll say Im an amazing multi-tasker, cut to me exiting the bathroom with a book in my hand, I take notice of the camera, "turn off the camera" I yell. Were again sitting in the interview/confetional situation, I tell them of my brilliance and mind for work information, cut to me quietly in front of a stack of books, asleep and drueling, I wake up embarrased, "turn the camera off". Finally, we get to the interview style presentation, on a more serious note. I again review what makes me perfect for the show, as we fade to black.

3 Audition Tape Assignment

Below are a few examples of audition tapes for 3 Reality shows different from one another. Each one showcases different types of personalities and characters, but they are similar because with each audition tape we see, the contestant is striving to appeal to what they think the show is looking for. It is them, that is real, but its a version of themselves that would land them a spot on the show.

Competition Show

This video represents a competition show. Although with most physically based shows, contestants would be superior athletes, WIPE OUT tends to purposely select less than stellar physical specimens. This is because the "wipe outs" are what make the show so entertaining. The show runners aren't looking for individuals that can navigate the obstacle course with ease, they seek people that will fall flat on their face more than once. So in this case, flabby out of shape funny contestants such as this are perfect.

Lifestyle/ Makeover show

I chose a "What not to Wear" audition tape for my lifestyle show. Shows like this tend not to show up on my radar, but my mom absolutely loves it. I felt it leans more towards a female audience usually with more Women being made over than men. This tape is a good example of how contestants that are chosen cater their auditions to what they assume show creators would want.

Big Brother-Chosen by Me

This is an audition for Big Brother. They want their audition tapes to run approximately 2 minutes in length. He went well under the asking lenghth, but still managed to appeal to what a show like big brother is often looking for-someone who would stir up a reaction. If you check out this video on youtube, There are a ton of hateful comments about this guy, yet it still gets attention from the haters. Perfect for a show like Big Brother. He also indicates to show creators that he isn't at all shy, as seen with his speedo moments, and incredibly obnoxious. Elements that are great for causing conflict which is interesting for any "Reality" based series.
